Dr. E. Laura Cruz trained at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and has been a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician since 1996. She is co-owner of LiveActive Sport Medicine Health and Performance, and on staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre and previously at SportCARE, Women’s College Hospital. Her practice is focused in sport and exercise medicine, a Ministry of Health designation.
Her Sport Medicine interests include: injury prevention, physical activity promotion, concussion awareness, and healthy active women (e.g., Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Exercise and Pregnancy; stress fracture prevention; Female Athlete Triad).
As a faculty member with the University of Toronto and member of the U of T Sport Medicine Fellowship Committee Dr. Cruz is an active teacher of medical learners, including Fellows, Residents and Family Medicine Physicians. She also has been a frequent invited speaker at National conferences, and various workshops and courses. Research interests include exercise and pregnancy and osteoarthritis, with publications in each area. Dr. Cruz is a Board Member for the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
Her patients are of all ages and include amateur to elite athletes, performers and dancers; coaches; dance, Pilates and Yoga teachers; active individuals and those wishing to become active.
Dr Cruz works with Gymnastics Canada, Skate Canada, soccer and hockey associations and is the current League Physician for the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. Dr. Cruz is a member of the medical staff at the Goreman/Shore Sports Injury Clinic at York University, looking after the women’s hockey and rugby teams. She has had the opportunity to be Team Physician and Chief Medical Officer for many National and World Championships, and worked with Figure Skating at the 2010 Olympics.
With her interest and expertise in concussion management Dr Cruz has consulted for various GTA sport organizations and schools regarding Return to School/Play guidelines and athlete care. She is trained in ImPACT concussion testing.
Dr. Cruz studied and taught ballet (Cecchetti method) and continues to pursue her lifelong interest in dance as Medical Consultant for Ballet Jorgen and many local dance and performing arts schools. She is also a Founding Member of the Arts Medicine Interest Group in CASEM.
