Yoga is centuries old and practiced globally. It has been well received in areas of health, wellness and disease prevention. It has been steadily evolving and now has strong medical evidence for its use in health promotion and disease management.

Dr. Julia Alleyne and Dr. Zahra Bardai have developed a program that focuses on introducing the concepts of yoga, the available evidence for its use and practical integration of yoga therapeutics into a health care plan aimed at preventative health and pain management.

Objectives

  1. To learn, as a practicing physician, key concepts of yoga as it applies to medicine.
  2. To enhance your knowledge of the physiology of yoga concepts as it applies to medical practice.
  3. To provide yoga pearls and techniques for pelvic pain, low back pain, and chronic pain syndromes that can be incorporated into a clinical encounter using case scenarios.
  4. To review the literature and strength of evidence for yoga as a modality in health promotion and preventative health.
  5. To be enriched with current standards of recommendations in medical practice for stress and exercise management using yoga concepts.
  6. To learn to write a yoga prescription using the exercise prescription format.
  7. To experience a practical yoga sequence that incorporates the theoretical information presented as listed above.

 

Learner Outcome

  • Increase learner’s awareness of the framework of yoga as it applies to medical practice.
  • Provide review of literature and strength of evidence for the use of yoga in common areas of health promotion, disease prevention and pain management.
  • Outline methods of prescribing yoga using exercise prescription format.
  • Introduce techniques that health care practitioners can incorporate into clinical encounters and that can be taught to patients as part of a self management/empowerment regiment.
  • Program to offer learner experiential yoga experience incorporating theoretical information presented.

 

Learning Format

This course is conducted in an enhanced learning environment where active learning takes place in small group workshop style learning with 50% of learning achieved via interactive format including small group discussion, interactive lectures, Q&A, simulations and hands on methods, case-based learning and role play.

Curriculum Outline

8:45 – 9:00 am Course Introduction and Housekeeping
9:00 – 10:00 am Physiology of Yoga Fundamentals

  1. Breath.
  2. Posture.
  3. Stillness.

Learning Format: Focus on application of fundamental concepts through didactic learning, case vignettes, and small group discussion. Use of short segment demonstration and attendee participation in practical breath work, postural cueing, mindfulness exercises.

10:00 – 10:15 am Break
10:15 ‐ 11:15 am Yoga for Health Promotion: Exercise and its Evidence with Application to Yoga
Learning Format: Focus on the spectrum of physical activity, assessment of physical activity readiness with the use of evidence based tools (PAR Q+, PARmedX and the Exercise Prescription). Learning module to utilize didactic teaching, small group discussions, and case vignettes highlighting application of tools.
11:15 – 12:15 am Practical Yoga Sequence
Attendee participation in yoga sequence incorporating morning concepts.
12:15 -­ 1:00 pm Lunch
1:00 ‐ 2:00 pm Yoga for Chronic Pain Management

  1. Pain Physiology.
  2. Assessing Pain with the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) tool.
  3. Using the SMART approach to Pain Management.
  4. Application of Yoga Fundamentals for pain management.

Learning Format: Learning module to utilize didactic teaching, small group discussions, and case vignettes highlighting application of tools.

2:00 ‐ 2:15 pm Break
2:15 ‐ 3:15 pm Evidence for the use of Yoga in Specific Pain and Related Syndromes

  1. Chronic Low Back Pain.
  2. Pelvic Pain.
  3. Fibromyalgia.
  4. Anxiety/Depression.

Learning Format: Learning module to utilize didactic teaching, small group discussions, and case vignettes.

3:15 -­ 4:15 pm Practical Yoga Sequence
Attendee participation in yoga sequence incorporating afternoon concepts.
4:15 -­ 4:30 pm Wrap up and Evaluations
